I would pay damn fine money to see the look on your faces as you read that headline.
According to the good folks over at Giant Freakin Robot, Zendaya is being eyed to replace Jeff Goldblum as The Fly. And there was you thinking Hollywood couldn’t get any more ridiculous than it already is… and it’s only Monday!
Let’s be clear, I don’t have an issue with Zendaya. In everything I’ve seen her in (basically the Spider-Man films) she was a fine actress. But playing The Fly? Come on man!
The following is completely unsubstantiated from the internet so, as usual, this is rumor control.
A Remake Of A Remake
George Langelaan’s short story was first adapted for the screen way back in 1958 and starred horror legend Vincent Price, and it was followed by two lesser-known sequels, Return Of The Fly and Curse Of The Fly.
However, it was David Cronenberg’s grotesque version in 1986 starring Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis that really put it on the map.
Goldblum plays scientist Seth Brundle who is studying teleportation using “telepods.” Being a hothead with a massive ego, he tests the telepods on himself but doesn’t realise that a housefly has entered the telepod with him. Over time, Brundle slowly transforms into a giant mutant fly. It has to be said, Goldblum is mesmerizing in his portrayal.
I have a genuine fear of flies and maggots, so writing this and image searching is actually making me queasy. But being the alpha I am, I shall put on my big boy pants and persevere.
Cronenberg’s The Fly received 8 nominations at various award ceremonies and won four of them including Best Horror Film at the Saturn Awards. It was even included in Time Magazine’s All-Time 100 Greatest Movies in 2005.
I’m Becoming Zendayafly
Obviously, we are yet to see if this comes to fruition but let’s be honest, it’s 21st-century Hollywood so this rumor is more than likely bang on the money. We all know Hollywood is completely devoid of ideas and on top of their creative bankruptcy, they enjoy nothing more than taking classic stories and ruining them.
The opportunity to see a young woman overcoming misogyny and the patriarchy to become a world-renowned scientist and push the boundaries of science will attract the wokerati like… well, flies.
Can Zendaya pull off the emotional and physical transformation into such a terrifying creature like The Fly? She weighs about 90lb soaking wet and sometimes looks about 13 years old. If this casting turns out to be true, is Hollywood truly lost, or can it create something unexpectedly interesting?
