Zack Snyder’s year is shaping up to be a big one. HBO bet big on Zack Snyder’s Justice League and apparently hit the jackpot with audiences (as well as some critics) last month, and today he took to Twitter and posted the trailer for his next opus, Army of the Dead.
As a personal aside, I gotta say I’ve been pretty ambivalent about his output post-Watchmen. It’s not that I think he’s a poor director (his work in 300 and Dawn of the Dead was top-tier), he’s just wrong for the DC Universe material, in my opinion. So when news of his next project, Army of the Dead, came over, I was ambivalent.
That said, here’s what you came for:
Well now, Mr. Snyder, you had my curiosity, etc. I almost wish that I had seen this cold, in a theater, because the first half of the trailer sets up a solid-looking heist thriller with Dave Batista with a slight Fallout: New Vegas feel. And then, wham, thousands of zombies. Showgirl zombies.
In case you haven’t watched it yet, I won’t spoil any more surprises, but suffice it to say Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead looks like a lot of fun.
Snyder’s playing to his strengths here, deliberately calling back to his success with his own Dawn of the Dead remake, right down to the needle-drop from a recently-deceased country and western singer.
It works, though! There’s a lot of action and tongue-in-cheek craziness on display, with the promise of lots of zombie violence and gore. I actually want to see this now, preferably on the big screen.
It will play in “select theaters” in “May”, so the producers are hedging their bets, what with the iffy theater-reopening situation going on. If you’re afraid of germs or just stuck in a podunk like I am, you can check out this ridiculousness on Netflix from May 21st.
Have a good day.
