Remember about a month ago and Army Of The Dead came out and it was a ‘masterpiece’ from the almighty Zack Snyder? Well, that was according to social media. It was one of the biggest movies to hit Netflix and broke viewing records, so Netflix has signed for Snyder to make Rebel Moon.
The movie is described as :
A grand fantasy adventure cantered around an enigmatic young woman who is given the responsibility by a peaceful colony on the outskirts of the galaxy to find warriors who can fend off an impending invasion by the despotic Regent Balisarius.
Snyder originally had the idea when he planned to pitch a movie for the Star Wars universe, but that was pre-Disney. He’s been working on the idea since then and now has the chance to bring it to the screen because of Netflix.
It has been said that Rebel Moon is inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai but like Star Wars. Which is odd, since Star Wars is just Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress in space. Is Zack just planning on making ‘Seven Samurai in Space‘?
Star Wars worked so well, since The Hidden Fortress wasn’t very well known, but the Seven Samurai has been remade, a few times, The Magnificent Seven both in 1960 and 2016, even The Three Amigos was a remake! You can probably think of a few more, with a similar story.
It seems there is already a ‘universe’ planned for Rebel Moon and to build it into a franchise, in the same way he is already building an Army Of The Dead franchise, with a prequel and an animated series in the works. Then, Army Of The Dead did stream to 72 million viewers, so it was a fairly big hit.
Snyder and Kurt Johnstad are credited with the story, with the screenplay done by Johnsted and Shay Hatten. It will be produced by Snyder and his wife Deborah and Wesley Coller through their company The Stone Quarry.
No actors are attached to the project yet and production for Rebel Moon is set to start in 2022.
