Marvel is going to be rebooting the 90’s classic, X-Men: The Animated Series, but this time it’s going to be called X-Men ’97.

Head writer Beau DeMayo who has publicly expressed his love and passion for the original series hopes to instill that passion and respect into this reboot.

During a Q&A session on his Instagram, DeMayo said that once he was hired as the head writer, he made sure to fill the writers’ room only with fans of the material. He revealed that he had one specific requirement for anyone who wanted to join the team:

“My general rule was you HAD to be a fan. No questions.”

“That’s her Cyclops, she’s the one who wanted to make you a trans character!”

The Witcher

Using The Witcher as an example of what not to do, he explains:

“I’ve been on a show – namely Witcher – where some of the writers were not or actively disliked the books and games (even actively mocking the source material.) It’s a recipe for disaster and bad morale. Fandom as a litmus test checks egos, and makes all the long nights worth it.

You have to respect the work before you’re allowed to add to its legacy.”

Whatever, I’m Superman again and that’s all that matters.

All The Right Noises

It’s so great to hear something like this from a person who is writing such an important show. I don’t know anyone who didn’t watch and love X-Men: The Animated Series back in the day. And those that didn’t like it probably grew up and now enjoy shows like Cuties.

After the outright heresy that the ‘writers’ over at Disney Marvel and Disney Star Wars have churned out over the last few years, I can’t help but be pessimistic. DeMayo is certainly saying all the right things, but then so did Kevin Smith when he was talking about his He-Man reboot.
