Another remake is on the way, this time The Witches of Eastwick. A deal has been signed between Warner Brothers and Ninja Thyberg.
I had no idea Ninja was a name, that is pretty badass. Anyway, Ninja Thyberg is a new director, only having one major production called Pleasure; about a 19 year old Swedish student who heads to LA to become a porn star. I might check that out and report back to you all, just to know what Witches of Eastwick might turn out like.
Thyberg will write and direct the remake, described as a reimagining of the dark fantasy comedy. There is no news if her screenplay will be based on the original movie or John Updike’s original novel of the same name.
The movie is being produced by Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher, both known for the Divergent trilogy and The Great Gatsby. Shooting will take place in the US.
The original version of The Witches of Eastwick was directed by George Miller and starred Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer. The plot was:
Three single women in a picturesque village have their wishes granted, at a cost, when a mysterious and flamboyant man arrives in their lives.
Sarandon previously claimed that she was forced to switch roles, when Cher muscled her way into the production and took her part. Speaking with the original screenwriter, Michael Cristofer, Sarandon recalled:
I initially was cast in Cher’s part, and didn’t find out till I got to LA — because I was living in Rome — that I was actually moved to a different part. I had to learn suddenly to play the cello, and I had never played an instrument in my life. They said they would sue me if I left, so I didn’t have much choice!
Cher sort of muscled her way into that part.
The new movie has not been cast yet, so it might be interesting to see who will take on the roles, especially someone trying to fill Jack Nicholson’s shoes.
