Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn is back with Copenhagen Cowboy, and he’s something of an enigma. After getting praise for the Pusher trilogy (1996–2005), Bronson (2008), and Valhalla Rising (2009) he really hit the big time with Drive (2011). That won him the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Director. He also snagged a BAFTA Award for Best Direction.
So his follow up, Only God Forgives (2013), was highly anticipated. When it was released it left a lot of people scratching their heads at some of the stylistic choices. It was both booed and received a standing ovation at Cannes.
Psychological horror film The Neon Demon (2016) followed the same stylistic choices, and by the time his first television series Too Old to Die Young hit Amazon Prime in 2019 nobody was watching.
Now he’s back, and this time on Netflix. They have just released the full trailer for his six-episode series Copenhagen Cowboy ahead of its January 5th premiere.
It looks classically Winding Refn, neon-drenched and noir. The series will follow Miu who, after a lifetime of servitude and on the verge of a new beginning, must traverse the ominous landscape of Copenhagen’s criminal underworld to enact vengeance.
She and her nemesis Rakel embark on an odyssey partly through the supernatural. Angela Bundalovic, Lola Corfixen, Zlatko Buric, Andreas Lykke Jørgensen, Jason Hendil-Forssell, Li Ii Zhang, and Dragana Milutinovic co-star.
