Drive and Only God Forgives director Nicolas Winding Refn is a Maniac Cop fan. So much that he is set to co-direct and executive produce an HBO TV series based on the slasher thriller.
According to the blurb, the show will be set in LA and the story unfolds:
”…through a kaleidoscope of characters ranging from cop to criminal. A killer in uniform has uncaged mayhem upon the streets, paranoia leads to social disorder as a city wrestles with the mystery of a brutal exterminator in blue. Is he mere mortal, or a supernatural force?”
The project will be created by his own NWR Originals production house and is being created in partnership with HBO and Canal Plus.
Refn will showrun and will co-direct with John Hyams (Universal Soldier: Regeneration). According to Winding Refn, the show will be:
“…an unadulterated, action-packed horror odyssey [along with being] a strong commentary on the decline of civilization”.
Refn and Hyams will both executive produce with Nick Hall, Lene Borglum, Frederic Fiore, Alex Gayner, Efe Cakarel, and original Maniac Cop trilogy director William Lustig.
