Wicked has been a huge success in theatres, so, of course they have to make a movie out of it. Got to cash in! It worked so well with Cats. Universal is producing and the director, Jon M Chu, announced this week that the movie will be released in two parts. Wicked will now be released at Christmas 2024 and then 2025.

Chu recently said on Twitter:

“As we prepared the production over the past year, it became increasingly clear that it would be impossible to wrestle the story of Wicked into a single film without doing some real damage to it. As we tried to cut songs of trim characters, those decisions felt like fatal compromises to the source material that has entertained us all for so many years,”

It seems he is trying to do the source material justice, but at the same time add depth to the characters. There isn’t a lot of depth in the source material, and thanks to social media we live in a time where people have the attention span of a 4-week-old puppy. I can’t see how making the movies longer is a good idea.

The only casting for the movie at the moment is Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. In the original Wizard of Oz, Elphaba, The Wicked Witch of the West, was played by Margaret Hamilton and Glinda was played by Billie Burke, but this is 2022.

I’m guessing in the movie they aren’t going to ‘green up’ Eviro since it is probably offensive to algae or snot.

Wicked has been in the works since 2004, but had numerous setbacks and then the pandemic got in the way. The stage musical by Gregory Maguire was based on the bestselling book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Winnie Holzman. Lyrics and music are created by Stephen Schwartz.

Maybe this is all just a dream, since you were there, and you were there…
