Wicked is a long-running Broadway musical, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman. Based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, it is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, the musical.
It tells the story of everything leading up to Dorothy’s arrival in Oz. For the original stage show, it starred Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth as Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (the Good Witch of the South).
Now pop singer Ariana Grande and actress Cynthia Erivo (Bad Times At The El Royale) will respectively portray Glinda and Elphaba in the upcoming movie adaptation. Vulture reported on the star’s Instagram posts last night to announce their casting.
Jon M. Chu (In the Heights) will direct and has been working up the movie since February.
The stage show version of Wicked has been running for 17 years and surpassed Les Misérables to become Broadway’s fifth-longest running show.
The London version is considered the best adaption and was nominated for a prestigious Laurence Olivier Award. Wicked has broken box-office records around the world, currently holding weekly-gross-takings records in Los Angeles, Chicago, St. Louis, and London. Wicked has surpassed $1 billion in total Broadway revenue, joining both The Phantom of the Opera and The Lion King as the only Broadway shows to do so.
The movie adaptation has been in the works for over a decade, with original writer Stephen Schwartz is adapting the screenplay with Winnie Holzman. Marc Platt will produce.
The signature tune from the show – Defying Gravity – has become a modern girl-power anthem.
Idina Menzel gonna be pissed!
