Counter programming at it’s finest, Wes Anderson’s next project will land right between The Flash (16th June) and Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny (June 30th) on June 23rd for wider release. Asteroid City will attempt to offer an alternative to genre blockbusters.

With an eclectic and eccentric filmography that includes The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Royal Tenenbaums, Moonrise Kingdom, and The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou filmmaker Anderson always delivers something… different.

Asteroid City will first open with a limited release on June 16th 2023 before Focus Features push the wider expansion release the following week.  The 1950s-set project is set in a fictional American desert town during a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention. According to the blurb:

“Chaos ensues as the event, organized to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition, is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events.”

As is traditional for Anderson, he has assembled a frankly breath taking cast. Once can only assume that these people work for him for free, or union rate, or something?

This time around the cast reads like a who’s who – Tom Hanks, Margot Robbie, Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Ed Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Stephen Park, Rupert Friend, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, Tony Revolori, Sophia Lillis, Jeff Goldblum, and Rita Wilson.

Anderson will produce Asteroid City alongside partners Steven Rales and Jeremy Dawson.
