We had the trailer up for Werewolves Within a little while back and it looked pretty good. I had the chance to watch it, so here’s my review.

Werewolves Within

The movie is based on a computer game, which I had never heard of, but the opening credits said Ubisoft and when I looked up details for this review, it kept giving me images from the game. I’m only a casual gamer, hence why I hadn’t heard of it, but you may have.

The overall story is :

A proposed gas pipeline has created divisions within the small town of Beaverfield. When a snowstorm traps its residents together inside the local inn, newly arrived forest ranger Finn (Sam Richardson) and postal worker Cecily (Milana Vayntrub) must try to keep the peace and uncover the truth behind a mysterious creature that has begun terrorizing the community.

It is directed by Josh Ruben and written by Mishna Wolff. It stars Sam Richardson, Milana Vayntrub, George Basil, Sarah Burns, Michael Chernus, Catherine Curtin, Wayne Duvall, Harvey Guillen and more.

This movie is described as a ‘Whodunnit With Teeth’ and this describes it very well. I’m not going to go into the story or any spoilers, since I wouldn’t want to ruin it for you. As the plot explains, a new ranger, Finn (Richardson) turns up to his new job and introduced to everyone by Cecily (Vanyntrub) who’s the local post lady.

There is a storm, the power goes out and the residents end up locked in a local inn and one by one they are picked off. We know is a werewolf and they have to figure out who that is.

Now, I’m not a massive fan of ‘whodunnits’, things like Agatha Christie or the such, never really been bothered with, so when I saw it was a whodunnit, I was a little put-off, but I ended up loving it.

The cast is great! There is a wonderfully written script, which fits all the characters really well. I really found myself giggling at some of the little one-liners, the delivery and just the way the players rift off each other. All the way through, the script is really funny.

Reading through some of the reviews on IMDb, quite a few people didn’t seem to ‘get’ the movie; I imagine they were wanting a ‘blood, guts and gore’ werewolf movie, but Werewolves Within isn’t really a werewolf movie, it’s a comedy horror whodunnit, but the killer is a werewolf.

I could see how the cast deliver their lines could be perceived as annoying, but I found it very funny. Some of the humor is actually quite subtle, the rest of it just tickles your funny bone.

Not only does the script provide great comic moments and lines, but it also has a good story. As I said, I’m not a fan of murder mysteries, but I couldn’t see who the killer was… you might if you are a fan of the genre, but at one point or another, you suspect everyone!

The direction is spot on, really well done. There are some wonderfully simple shots that put a smile on your face and let you enjoy the movie. I can’t think of a movie I could compare this to, if there is anything, let me know, coz I would like to see it.

For me, this is the best comedy horror I’ve seen in a while; it is very well made, funny, a great cast and a decent story.

I give Werewolves Within 4.5 out of 5. I’d say it’s one of those movies you can enjoy with a few friends and beers, or a good date movie, as long as your other half has a bit of a twisted sense of humour. I will watch this again a few more times, coz I really enjoyed it.

Werewolves Within is now on streaming services.
