The long box office recovery continues, very slowly. MGM’s Creed III surprised by breaking clean through the $100 million mark globally. With $58.6 million domestic and $41.8 million, it pushed to the best opening for the entire Rocky series to date.

With a budget of $75 million, small by today’s standards, it also looks like it will head well into a tidy profit. Creed made $173.5 million, while Creed II snared $214 million. This is performing more strongly than either of those. Amazon will be happy, as this is the first big MGM release since its acquisition.

The steam continues to leak from the MCU kettle after a disappointing Phase 4, with Phase 5 spluttering. Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania fell another 62% to $12.4 million. That brings its domestic total to $186.3 million and worldwide to $419.5 million. This will make a profit, but the speed of the drop and lack of legs will cause alarm bells to ring at Marvel Studios. Box office trends are undeniable.

They have oversaturated their own market. Whereas MCU events were must-see, now with four movies a year, and several TV shows, it is a struggle to keep in the loop. Then you miss some softly reviewed entries such as She-Hulk on Disney+ and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever at the theater and… voila… you are cured of MCU. It is no longer something you have to do in order to keep up. Now might as well wait until the movies come out on Disney+ at home just circa 60 days after release in theaters. Disney, you may have killed yet another golden goose. Well done.

“Look Mickey, there goes our profits!”

Cocaine Bear dipped 54% in its second weekend to pull in $11 million domestic and $10 million overseas. With a total of $52 million against a budget of $30 million it should see a profit now ad spending stops and word of mouth becomes the primary vehicle.

Avatar: The Way Of Water finally slipped out of the top 5, landing in 6th with another $3 million and change.

Product flood back into theaters over the next few weeks. Operation Fortune: Ruse du guerre will get a wider release, then Scream VI is followed by Shazam! Fury of the Gods, then John Wick: Chapter 4, then Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves before The Super Mario Bros. Movie. All one week after another.
