Things are moving around at Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films. Something of a civil war rages over the future of the DECU across several divisions, given that the fans and the studio apparently want two totally different things.
There are some crazy, old-fashioned people in the company who actually like money think maybe Warner Bros. should give the fans what they want. Others disagree.
But things are definitely moving. News comes now that the schedule is being somewhat de-cluttered and therefore two projects are in the trash. James Wan’s Aquaman spin-off The Trench, and Ava DuVernay’s New Gods. Warner Bros and DC released a statement:
“As part of our DC slate, some legacy development titles including New Gods and The Trench will not be moving forward.
We thank our partners Ava DuVernay, Tom King, James Wan and Peter Safran for their time and collaboration during this process and look forward to our continued partnership with them on other DC stories. The projects will remain in their skillful hands if they were to move forward in the future.”
DuVernay and Tom King had been working to adapt New Gods from the Jack Kirby comic for more than two years. This would have covered the origins of Darkseid and his world, Apokolips, being at war.
A decision to not push on with this could potentially be seen as another step away from anything to do with Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
The Trench was an aquatic horror based on the fish creatures from the boat scene in Aquaman. Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald had written a script and Wan was set to direct. Wan will still shoot Aquaman 2 for Warner and DC this year.
The Trench was also the title of the second of Steve Alten’s Meg series of giant shark novels. A sequel to The Meg is being spun up, also at Warner’s. So this potentially saved them some confusion.
The DCEU remains a mess with Matt Reeves’ The Batman in the can and no word of a direction for Joker.
However the Snyder Cut is now a thing, and The Flash will apparently re-launch a shared universe. Black Adam, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods, Blue Beetle, Batgirl, Supergirl, Green Lantern Corps, Static Shock, Zatanna, a third Wonder Woman, and a new Superman are all at various stages.
Meanwhile, the destroyer of franchises, the bringer of the anti-lucrative equation, the non-finisher of stories, waits and grows hungry.
