Walter Hill, the man behind The Warriors and 48 Hrs, has another movie coming out. Dead For A Dollar is a Western starring Willem Defoe and Christoph Waltz. He also has a long association with Alien. While out doing promotion for Dead For A Dollar at Venice he spoke to The Hollywood Reporter and spilled the beans on something that was in the pipeline, long ago, for Alien 5.
Hill produced the original and also did a rewrite on it early in development. He wrote the story outline for James Cameron’s Aliens, wrote the script for David Fincher’s Alien 3 and was a producer on that movie. He was also a producer on Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Alien: Resurrection. The bad news is he was also a producer on Alien vs. Predator twice, and then the Prometheus and Alien: Covenant combo.
He said he wrote a script for Alien 5 that would bring back Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley but that the suits didn’t want to know:
“We took a shot at that a couple of years back with Sigourney. But that was back when ‘Aliens’ was still at Fox. The people at Disney, who now control ‘Aliens,’ have expressed no interest in going down that road. I had an idea for a good story with the Ripley character and Sigourney. But I do hope to see her in Venice.”
All the fans want is Alien 5 with Ripley… so the studio strategy of giving them precisely NOT that is pretty standard Hollywood. Hill’s script was co-written with David Giler and a copy dated March 2020 has been seen.
There are two projects in flight at the moment in this universe. Noah Hawley’s prequel series set on Earth, and Fede Alvarez’s new Hulu offering. None of these are continuations.
