Taika Waititi, who recently directed Thor: Love and Thunder and is going to write and direct an upcoming Star Wars movie, claims he forgot Natalie Portman was in the prequels.

While promoting his new Thor movie, Waititi spoke to Rolling Stone and was asked what it was like to work with Portman. He responded,

“Basically I was like, a lot of fans miss Jane Foster, and people want to see her again. It just seemed like the perfect opportunity, because the character was so great in the Jason Aaron run of Thor.”

He then went into greater detail on how they were going to being the character Jane Foster back:

“Kevin [Feige] was already like, ‘I’d love to try and figure out a way to bring Mighty Thor into this film and bring Natalie back.’ It didn’t take much convincing. She had never heard of that run of the comic, so I just dropped off some comics for her…. Anytime you ask, how did we cast so-and-so? We offered them millions of dollars and they said yes! [Laughs]”

You’re probably wondering what this has to do with him and what he doesn’t know about Star Wars, well he talks about that too. Apparently Portman asked Waititi what he was going to work on next after Thor: Love and Thunder. He stated,

“Natalie said to me, what do you do next? And I said ‘I’m trying to work on a Star Wars thing. Have you ever wanted to be in a Star Wars movie?’ She said, ‘I’ve been in Star Wars movies.’ I forgot about those ones. [Laughs]”

He claims he forgot about the prequels. Now, personally I’m going to press X to doubt on that one. I think he doesn’t think about it, but also doesn’t know Star Wars as much as he’d like us to believe.

I’m fine when actors and directors say they’re not big fans of the source material they’re working with. After all, it’s just a job and they don’t have to be fans. Like when Michael Shannon said he didn’t get how obsessed fans got about Superman.

In this case though, we’re to believe Waititi is a Star Wars fan and yet he somehow forgot all about the prequels? Sure we’d all like to forget them, but we can’t. Lucasfilm announced Waititi would be directing and co-writing an upcoming Star Wars film back on May 4, 2020. The announcement stated,

“Academy Award winner Taika Waititi who recently won Best Adapted Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit and directed the widely-acclaimed first season finale episode of The Mandalorian on Disney+, will direct and co-write a new Star Wars feature film for theatrical release.”

Joining Waititi on the screenplay will be Academy Award nominee Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917, Last Night in Soho), who received a BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year on the three-time Oscar-winning film, 1917,”

While nothing right now is known about Waititi’s Star Wars movie, Thor: Love and Thunder is officially released today.
