First the trailer leaked, then it was officially released. Now Sony is going all in and has followed this up with an Uncharted featurette to show us more. Their upcoming film adaptation of the Uncharted video game series is rolling its hype train as it tries to overcome a lengthy production and a gap since the last video game release.

Uncharted

The best-selling and critically acclaimed video game series tells the story of Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) hunting for treasures with his wisecracking Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg).

Uncharted will tell the story of how they first met, serving as a prequel to the games. The story is said to span the globe as the two go in search of the greatest treasure never found, which Nathan’s brother disappeared while searching for.

The game series began with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, released on the venerable PlayStation3 in 2007, followed by its sequels Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009), Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception (2011), with the final supposed installment, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, released on the PlayStation 4 in 2016.

A prequel, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, was released for Sony’s PlayStation Vita handheld system in 2011, followed by the card game spin-off Uncharted: Fight for Fortune in 2012. A standalone game to the series, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, was released in 2017, with Chloe Frazer as the game’s lead.

Having shipped more than 41 million units, it is one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time, making a movie adaption somewhat inevitable.

The main series has been widely credited by critics and video game publications for raising the standards of single-player video games. The action in the games was likened to being able to play a Hollywood-produced action-adventure movie.

The film also stars Sophia Ali as Chloe Frazer, Tati Gabrielle as Braddock, and Antonio Banderas. Uncharted opens in cinemas on February 18th 2022.
