Firstly, the title of The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is far too long. I’m just going to call it Unbearable from now on. I got the chance to see this and, as you can tell from the trailer, it’s stupidly good fun!
If you have ever seen the Last Movie Outpost Livestreams, you know that the guys don’t take ourselves too seriously. Anything for a cheap laugh, that’s us. I like people that don’t take themselves too seriously, like The Rock back when he was wrestling.
Nic Cage, in Unbearable, is not taking himself seriously. He has been in some amazing movies in the past. From his early stuff like Raising Arizona and Wild at Heart, to some of his more modern stuff like Mandy and Pig. I wasn’t a fan of Pig, but that doesn’t detract from what a well made movie it was.
The best think about Nic Cage is when he goes full Nic Cage! Something like Mandy or Prisoners of Ghostland, he’s just such fun to watch. I wouldn’t say that he’s full Nic Cage in this, but he’s playing himself, sometimes twice, and it’s just fun.
In this movie, he’s Nicholas Cage, as he himself puts it:
“You’re not an actor, you’re a movie star!”
He’s separated from his wife, he’s in therapy with his kid since he only likes to talk about himself and he’s not getting the roles he used to get. His agent has a big paying job, but it’s just appearing at some rich guys birthday party. Reluctantly, he goes and meets Javi (Pedro Pascal) only to find that Javi is an arms dealer that the CIA is after.
There is more to the story and plot and it’s not bad. It’s not Shakespeare, but it’s a fun ride. The main focus of the movie is Nic and Pedro and they are just having fun all the way through and I kind of loved it.
There are some really stupid scenes in it, but I honestly did laugh a lot. I would love to see the outtakes for this movie, because I’ll bet there was a lot with the pair of them corpsing all the time.
I wouldn’t say The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent is Cage’s greatest movie, but it is a lot of fun, heartfelt in places and overall a good watch.
