It spawned countless imitations and one very cool little theme park experience. Now Universal is bringing back Twister. It has lined up Oblivion, Tron: Legacy and Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski to direct and he is in final negotiations before signing.
The original starred the late, great Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. The pair were ex-husband and wife storm chasers putting their recent divorce behind them to hunt down and study a tornado from the inside using their revolutionary new modelling equipment.
The supporting cast included Cary Elwes as the leader of a rival team and Philip Seymour Hoffman as a member of their crew.
It came out right in the middle of director Jan de Bont’s hot streak with Speed also proving a smash-hit. The movie was executive produced by Steven Spielberg and penned by the Jurassic Park and The Andromeda Strain writer Michael Crichton. A global hit with $494million in tickets and widely praised storm effects.
Frank Marshall will produce the new film and they are currently seeing writers to create a new take.
