Once again we’re getting a remake to a movie that not only doesn’t need it, but the original isn’t all that old – Goodnight Mommy.
Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala’s 2014 thriller horror movie is getting remade by Amazon Studios. The two main characters have been cast.
Naomi Watts is already on board for the leading role. After all, she was already in the Funny Games remake and The Ring American remake, might as well add this. She’s a great actress, so it’s a nice get, I have to say.
Reported by Variety, Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti of Big Little Lies will play the twin sons to Watts’ character.
Supporting cast right now are Jeremy Bobb (The Outsider), Crystal Lucas-Perry (Mimesis Nosferatu) and Peter Hermann (Younger). No word on which roles they’ll be playing yet.
A synopsis of Goodnight Mommy reads:
Elias and his twin brother Lukas arrive at their mother’s house to find her face covered in bandages − the result, she explains, of recent cosmetic surgery. Lukas delights in their mother’s uncharacteristically lax house rules, but in Elias’ mind, a dreadful thought takes root: the sinking suspicion that this woman beneath the gauze, who’s making their food and sleeping in the next room, isn’t really their mother.
Kyle Warren has written the script and the movie will be directed by Matt Sobel (Take Me To The River). Watts is also producing this English-language remake with Fiala and Franz also attached as executive producers.
No word when filming will start or a release date.
The original Goodnight Mommy was selected as the Austrian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards, but it was not nominated.
