It has now been ten years since TRON: Legacy and 40 years since the Disney original. TRON: Legacy made a decent haul but had a huge budget, mostly due to VFX, so didn’t clear whatever Disney’s apparent hurdle rate was for an immediate sequel.

Then there was a TRON TV series on Disney+ that was cancelled at concept stage. TRON3 was coming, then it wasn’t, then it was again. There is a hugely popular ride at Shanghai Disneyland.

Nothing ever became concrete though. The chatter has started again across several sources, and the ever reliable Dark Horizons has aggregated the various stories.

Mitchell Leib, the President of Music & Soundtracks at Disney was on a Light The Fuse podcast and dropped a pretty big scoop. He’s had a meeting with Daft Punk’s manager for preliminary discussions about the soundtrack for a third movie:

“We’re looking at making a sequel to Tron now, we’re looking at Tron 3, and we’ve got a great script, I mean a really phenomenal script that we’re very excited about. Whereas the timing wasn’t right to have done it years ago, I think we feel like the timing is right now, and I feel like we’ve learned a lot of lessons from that last movie..

The right and first thing to do is to bring Daft Punk back and see if they want to [return]…We don’t even know who will be directing yet. We’re hopeful that Joe Kosinski will come back and do another one…A lot of things gotta fall into the right places.”

So they confirm TRON: Legacy and upcoming Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski could be in the frame.

Back in April he told comicbook.com in an interview that:

“There’s always been an interest since Legacy [for a sequel]. There’s always been talk and murmuring of doing another and continuing the story… I think it’s still a nice jewel in the crown of Disney IP and I think there are fans and people petitioning and pushing to continue it inside the halls of Disney.

So I think it could happen. Like anything, it just needs the right confluence of… it’s all about timing and the right elements and everything’s got to come together for a movie to happen.”

Finally DisInsider claim that a new TRON movie with Jared Leto in the lead has been bubbling up and they are actively searching for a director. This matches the reports they are shopping for directors. Leto was first rumored back in 2017.

Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde and Jeff Bridges are expected to return.
