The first trailer for Robert Eggers’ latest film The Northman, starring Björk, Anya Taylor-Joy, Alexander Skarsgård and Nicole Kidman, has been released.

The Northman

The third film from the filmmaker, whose past films were The Witch and The Lighthouse, follows Skarsgård’s Viking prince Amleth, who embarks on a vengeful mission to defeat Claes Bang’s villainous Fjölnir in 10th Century Iceland.

The Lighthouse‘s Willem Dafoe and Ethan Hawke also star in the film. Taylor-Joy plays a mysterious character who says that she can break men’s minds, while Björk plays a witch.

The film’s synopsis reads:

“From visionary director Robert Eggers comes The Northman, an action-filled epic that follows a young Viking prince on his quest to avenge his father’s murder. With an all-star cast that includes Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe.”

In addition to directing, Eggers co-wrote The Northman with the Icelandic novelist and poet Sjón.

In a recent interview, Eggers talked about the scale of the movie, which is greater than anything he’s previously done. He said:

“The scale is so huge and there are so many more locations and things that I couldn’t do everything or know every prop myself. That’s been a challenge with the new movie.”

“We’re designing all these worlds, building these villages, we’re making thousands of costumes and props, training the horses the things they’ll need to do, designing the shots for the films.”

“But this movie there is rarely a scene that isn’t on a boat or doesn’t have a lot of extras.”

Also starring in the film is Ethan Hawke, Claes Bang, Murray McArthur, Ian Gerard Whyte, Kate Dickie, Hafpór Júlíus Björnsson, and Ralph Ineson.
