The Green Knight is a fantasy re-telling of the medieval story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, starring Dev Patel of Slumdog Millionaire, Lion and Hotel Mumbai as Sir Gawain.
He is King Arthur’s reckless nephew, who embarks on a quest to confront the gigantic green-skinned stranger.
Here’s the trailer:
The synopsis for The Green Knight reads:
“A fantasy adventure based on the Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic green-skinned stranger.”
A small detail about the film, it was given an R rating, for violence and nudity. Anyone who has read the classic Sir Gawain and The Green Knight tale could tell you that this certainly strays from the tame violence and content in the original story.
This indicates that either it will take several extreme liberties in the adaptation or that the violence and nudity will simply be just adult enough to warrant the R rating.
Starring alongside Patel is a stellar cast including Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Barry Keoghan, Erin Kellyman, Kate Dickie, Sarita Choudhury, Sean Harris as King Arthur, and Ralph Ineson as The Green Knight.
The movie is both written and directed by acclaimed American filmmaker David Lowery, director of the films Deadroom, St. Nick, Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Pete’s Dragon, A Ghost Story and The Old Man & The Gun previously.
It was originally set to open in theaters last summer (watch last year’s trailer) but was delayed due to pandemic shutdowns. The delay won’t be that long, as it will still open in theaters this year.
A24 is now set to release Lowery’s The Green Knight in select theaters on July 30th. It doesn’t appear that it will be also streaming when it releases or eventually more theaters down the road.
