There was an accidental shooting on the set of Alec Baldwin’s new movie Rust. Filming was taking place at Bonanza Creek Ranch on the outskirts of Sante Fe, New Mexico. Two members of the crew were sent to the hospital.
Filming was put on halt and locked down after the incident, a production spokesperson confirmed to Deadline,
“There was an accident today on the New Mexico set of Rust involving the misfire of a prop gun with blanks,”
The film’s director of photography, Halyna Hutchins, and director Joel Souza were both shot with the prop gun. Hutchins, 42, sadly died after being transported to a hospital in Albuquerque. Souza, 48 remains in a local hospital; his condition as of now is still unknown.

Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the Bonanza Creek Ranch movie set of the western “Rust”, October 21, 2021, when an 911 caller reported a shooting on the set.
The sheriff’s office confirms that two individuals were shot on the set of Rust. Halyna Hutchins, 42, director of photography and Joel Souza, 48, director, were shot when a prop firearm was discharged by Alec Baldwin, 68, producer and actor.
Ms. Hutchins was transported, via helicopter, to University of New Mexico Hospital where she was pronounced dead by medical personnel. Mr. Souza was transported by ambulance to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical center where he is undergoing treatment for his injuries.
This investigation remains open and active. No charges have been filed in regard to this incident. Witnesses continue to be interviewed by detectives.
The plot of the movie follows Harland Rust, an outlaw, who has spent a number of years of his life with a bounty on his head. He finds out that his estranged 13-year-old grandson is set to hang for an accidental murder, Rust travels to Kansas to break him out of prison. From there the fugitives must outrun the U.S. Marshals and bounty hunters.
There’s no date set for the release that we know of and of course now with this accident, it’s all up in the air.
