Paramount Pictures has released a behind-the-scenes featurette for Top Gun: Maverick, taking a look at some of the intense training Tom Cruise had his co-stars go through.
This looks mental and you have to give it to the crazy little lunatic, he always gives it his all. The man seems obsessed with making everything authentic and giving the audience that complete immersive experience.
In an era where most ‘action’ heroes are happy to stand there flexing their muscles in front of a green screen, leaving CGI nerds to make them look good (Dwayne Johnson), Cruise’s dedication is refreshing.
“I wasn’t ready to make a sequel until we had a special story, worthy of a sequel, and until technology evolved so that we could delve deeper into the experience of a fighter pilot.”
Cast members were put through a three-month course that involved, among other things, underwater survival and aviation training. They also had to learn how to film themselves while flying.
Director Joseph Kosinski says:
“When they’re up in the jet, they have to direct themselves, essentially,”
“I had to really teach cinematography and the lighting so that they understood what’s going to look good on camera.”
Top Gun: Maverick is one of those rare films I will gladly hand over my hard-earned money to see. Like him or loathe him, when Tom finally decides to hang up his pixie-sized boots, Hollywood will be a lesser place for it.
