Takealook Atmytitties’ (Taika Waititi’s) Thor Love And Thunder has had an astonishing 67.7% drop at the box office in its second week. The movie raked in $144 million domestically in its opening weekend but that number has plummeted to just $46 million this weekend.
This makes Thor Love And Thunder one of the worst box office drops in MCU history. Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness dropped 67% when it was released in May this year.
Big drops in the second week are not anything new to Marvel but when you look at the top 10 biggest drops, the top five are all from Phase 4.
- Black Widow – 67.8%
- Thor: Love and Thunder – 67.7%
- Spider-Man: No Way Home – 67.5%
- Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – 67%
- Eternals – 62.3%
- Spider-Man: Homecoming – $62.2%
- Ant-Man and the Wasp – 61.6%
- Captain America: The First Avenger – 60.7%
- The Incredible Hulk – 60.1%
- Avengers: Age of Ultron – 59.4%
It’s also worth noting that Spider-Man: No Way Home also fell by 68%, but it made over $100 million more than Love and Thunder in its opening weekend.
It Ended With Endgame
Let’s be honest, the trailer for Love And Thunder looked ridiculous and reviews have been lukewarm at best.
The usual complaints have been bogging the movie down. Some criticized the lack of self-awareness about Jane’s cancer. Others pointed to Thor once again being a giant man baby and, of course Korg, is now gay as well as ‘King’ Valkyrie.
Fans point to this now inevitable “wokeness” as an issue. Many have complained that the humor is weak, ill-timed and takes audiences out of the moment at hand.
Naturally others will claim that cinemas are still trying to recover from the pandemic, or maybe it’s just superhero fatigue. However the simple fact is that Marvel Phase 4 just hasn’t been very good.
Box Office Successes
As of this writing, Thor Love And Thunder is $30 million dollars behind Minions: The Rise of Gru for the 5th spot. The number 4 spot goes to Jurassic World Dominion which has coined in $360 million in the US after surpassing $900 million dollars in their total worldwide gross.
The Batman is 3rd with $370 million in the US. Meanwhile, Paramount Pictures’ Top Gun: Maverick is flying away at number 1 with over $620 million dollars domestically and $1.2Bn world wide.
On the back of this we’ve had the abject failure that was Lightyear suggesting that perhaps audiences are simply getting a little bit sick and tired of Disney’s nonsense.
We discussed Love and Thunder and Lightyear, amongst other things, on the Livestream on Sunday. Drunken Yoda didn’t much care for Love and Thunder and Not George Lucas said Lightyear was atrocious. Shawn and I haven’t seen either so we just sat back and made inappropriate jokes about them both.
Let us know what you think of Thor 4 Have you seen it, are you surprised at the drop at the box office? Or like most do you think Phase 4 has been a travesty?
