So this is 50? Getting old sucks. Just when the sheer awesomeness of not being an idiotic little bag of angst and neuroses hits you as you finally grow up, when you reach your prime earning years and finally figure out what it’s all about, your body starts to screw you over. Your trim waist disappears. Bits of you stop working. And then they start to remake all your favorite movies, while your favorite movie stars start dying.

New music starts to be uniformly terrible, while the awful realization that your time on this planet is finite hits you like a ton of bricks. To make matters worse, a new generation arrives behind you that you swear are twice as clueless and even more entitled than you were, even on your worst day.

Judd Apatow

Why anyone would need a movie to remind us of this suckage is a mystery, but Hollywood thinks we do and that Judd Apatow is the man to deliver it. Following up Apatow’s middle-aged crisis comedy drama This Is 40, is the inevitable This Is 50.

The 2012 original starred Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann as a married couple staring down the barrel of turning 40. John Lithgow, Megan Fox, and Albert Brooks co-starred.

The movie was a financial success, even though the reviews were mixed as it was sold as a comedy but had more angst than people went in expecting. Now 54-years-old, Apatow says he has outlined a story:

“I couldn’t have done it five years ago and I can’t do it five years from now, so I’ve been outlining that and hope it’s something that we get to do. I feel like [‘This Is 40’] has really aged well, and it always feels like everyone watches it when they turn 40 and they go, ‘Oh, I understand it all now’ (laughs). So I’m enthusiastic about putting that together.”

Apatow Productions is now under the Universal umbrella as part of a co-production deal, so expect this to be a Universal distributed picture when it sees the light of day.
