CBS All Access is the latest provider to take a go at bringing Steven King’s post-apocalyptic dark fantasy novel The Stand to the screen. The tale of a super-flu gone awry that ushers in the end of times may seem uncomfortably timely to some. The series launches on December 17th.

When a computer error in a Defense Department laboratory allows a biological weapon known as the Captain Tripps virus to make it out into the world a global pandemic follows. A bleak new world is left with no establishment or institutions, no security or society. 99% of people die. Only the immune remain, a handful of survivors. Some find themselves drawn to 108-year-old Mother Abigail, others towards a dark man called Randall Flagg.

Whoopi Goldberg stars as Mother Abagail with Alexander Skarsgard as Randall Flagg.

Others include James Marsden as Stu Redman, Amber Heard as Nadine Cross, Jovan Adepo as Larry Underwood, Heather Graham as Rita Blakemoor, Owen Teague as Harold Lauder, and Odessa Young as Frannie Goldsmith.

Josh Boone and Ben Cavell are the producers.
