A trailer has been released for The Shark is Broken, a stage play, currently on at London’s West End, about the making of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws.
Written by Joseph Nixon and Ian Shaw (Robert Shaw’s son) and inspired by his father’s diaries, the show offers some insight into Hollywood at the time, and look behind the scenes of one of the greatest blockbusters of all time.
Set on a boat in 1974 and shooting has stalled. The lead actors Robert Shaw, Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss are stuck on the boat, at the mercy of foul weather and a faulty mechanical co-star.
Ian Shaw stars as his father Robert Shaw. He is joined by Liam Murray Scott as Richard Dreyfuss (reprising the role he performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2019), and Demetri Goritsas as Roy Scheider.

The synopsis for the play reads:
“Dive into the drama behind the scenes of Jaws! Martha’s Vineyard, 1974: shooting on Jaws has stalled. The film’s lead actors – Robert Shaw, Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss – are stuck on a boat, at the mercy of foul weather and a faulty mechanical co-star. Awash with both alcohol and ambition, three hammered sharks start to bare their teeth…”
The Shark Is Broken is a stage play directed by UK actor and theater director Guy Masterson, director of many other plays including One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and 12 Angry Men. The script is co-written by Nixon and Ian Shaw.
This play had its World Premiere at the 2019 Edinburgh Festival Fringe before relocating to its new home in London. I was one of the lucky few that managed to get tickets for the Edinburgh show, it truly is brilliant, you can read my review here.
The Shark Is Broken is on now at the Ambassadors Theatre in London only until February 13th, 2022. For more info and tickets, visit the play’s official website.
