Universal Pictures has secured the rights to adapt Christopher Pike’s 1993 sci-fi horror novel The Season of Passage into a movie.
The Season Of Passage features a U.S. manned expedition to Mars that is set to follow a Russian mission that completely disappeared. Nobody can explain what went wrong with the Russian mission. Before the US crew even launches, they begin to experience terrifying nightmares about Mars. One member of the crew, Dr. Lauren Wagner, begins hearing voices in her head from somebody demanding that she “love them”.
Wagner is a celebrity. She is involved with the most exciting adventure mankind had ever undertaken. The whole world admires and respects her. However, she is now terrified.
In the New York Times the bestseller was described as:
“A terrifying novel of horror and salvation.”
Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Doctor Sleep) will direct, produce and co-write the screenplay with James Flanagan.
Let us hope it fares better than Red Planet, Mission To Mars, or John Carpenter’s The Ghosts Of Mars and also that it doesn’t give Elon Musk any ideas. Recently Netflix cancelled their Hilary Swank led Mars serial Away, while they have another Mars journey adventure in the form of Anna Kendrick’s Stowaway coming this year.
The Midnight Club on Netflix is the second adaption of Pike’s work for Trevor Macy, who will also be one of the producers on The Season Of Passage.
