It seems like whenever I turn around, there’s an announcement that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is working on yet another movie. This time, Johnson is making a Christmas movie titled Red One.
It’s going to be an action-adventure film from Amazon Studios. Johnson will also be producing Red One, via his Seven Bucks Productions. He has brought Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle director Jake Kasdan on board to helm the movie. In addition, Johnson has also brought onboard Hobbs & Shaw writer Chris Morgan for the script.
Seven Bucks Productions President of Production, Hiram Garcia came up with the story behind Red One and has been working to get it made for several years now. Johnson, Seven Bucks co-founder Dany Garcia and Amazon Studios all are happy about the collaboration on the movie.
Red One is in the early stages of development. The plot details are largely unknown and kept under wraps. However, it’s been described as a fun, family-friendly Christmas adventure.
Amazon fought hard this summer to get the rights to Red One, after a long bidding war. This implies they believe the movie will be successful, but let’s be honest, it’s a movie starring The Rock. Of course it will.
Hiram Garcia commented on the movie:
“Red One is incredibly special to me and a story I’ve wanted to tell for years. An epic, edge-of- your seat, action adventure that takes beloved holiday mythology and turns it on its head. I’m thrilled to have our Seven Bucks team join forces with Amazon to bring this fun Holiday tale to life for a global audience.”
The head of Amazon Studios, Jen Salke has also expressed excitement to bring it to the streaming service:
“Seven Bucks Productions is a leader in creating unique and compelling entertainment for the entire family, and we know Red One will continue that tradition. Hiram’s concept and the world he’s envisioned are uniquely original and we are so excited to team with Seven Bucks Productions and Chris Morgan to help bring it to life. Red One is just the first step in what we know will be a successful, collaborative venture.”
With this news, fans of Jumanji might be wondering about the next instalment of that franchise. The makers have already confirmed another sequel is in the works and it’s been rumored that Kasdan has been working on it.
His plate might be getting full, seeing Red One will start filming in early 2022 and releasing for the 2023 holiday season. It’s also possible he will not be heading up the next Jumanji movie.
As for Johnson, he has Netflix’s Red Notice up to bat, co-starring with Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot. It’s releasing on November 12.
