Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson appears to be transcending standard action movie stardom, with comedic turns (Jumanji), cameos as himself (Fighting With My Family), a potential return to wrestling, a TV show (Ballers) and now a TV show all about him growing up.
The NBC series Young Rock has started full production in and around Brisbane and South East Queensland in Australia.
The Universal Television show received a straight to series order and will chronicle The Rock’s childhood. Johnson himself will appear in each episode The show is being run by Fresh Off the Boat creator Nahnatchka Khan and his co-executive producer Jeff Chiang.
Adrian Groulx, Bradley Constant and Uli Latukefu have been cast as differently aged versions of Johnson – 10, 15 and 20 years old in that order. Stacey Leilua and Joseph Lee Anderson play his parents. Jeffrey Walker and Daina Reid are taking turns in the dirctors chair.
