The Hollywood Reporter is… reporting that Jon Bernthal is back as Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher, in Daredevil: Born Again. Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio started shooting the series this week in New York and Bernthal will join them on set shortly.

Strangely, it has also been confirmed that Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson will not be returning as Karen Page and Foggy Nelson. It seems unlikely they would re-cast these roles with so many of the originals returning, so we can only presume they just don’t feature in the story.

Punisher

The Born Again comic detailed Daredevil’s descent into insanity and destitution at the Kingpin’s hands, as well as a subsequent struggle to build a new life for himself. In that story, Karen Page had left years earlier to pursue an acting career. After a brief period of success, she became a heroin addict and was reduced to starring in pornographic films in Mexico.

A complication is that this storyline, mixed with elements of Guardian Devil was loosely adapted in 2018 as the third season of the Netflix show, minus the heroin and porn acting.

There are eighteen episodes to film, making this the longest MCU series to date. The show will not finish shooting until near to the end of the year, so will not screen before 2024.

Bernthal first appeared in season two of Daredevil, before headlining his own show for two seasons before the mass Marvel Studios cancellation of Netflix content. The Punisher did not appear in the Born Again comic. Both Cox and D’Onofrio will appear in Echo, which leads directly into Daredevil: Born Again.

Can Marvel and the MCU shake themselves out of their post-Endgame slump?
