While there was a writer’s strike in Hollywood in 2007, some people carried on working against union instructions. They made Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog, starring Neil Patrick Harris, Felicia Day and Nathan Fillion.

Hopefully, you’ve heard of this and would like to see it again. If you haven’t, you are in for a treat. Here’s my Overlooked Review of it.

More good news is, it’s free on YouTube! It’s only 45 minutes long and it is worth a watch. I know you may not like musicals – most of us had to sit through Mama Mia – this is not that. It is fun, it is silly and, best of all, there is no Abba! It’s a genuine treat of a short series. Sit back, and enjoy Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.

The series was written by writer/director Joss Whedon, his brothers Zack Whedon and Jed Whedon with writer/actress Maurissa Tancharoen.

The idea was to create something small and inexpensive, yet professionally done, in a way that would circumvent the issues that were being protested during the strike.

The reception was overwhelmingly positive with Time magazine naming it #15 in Time’s Top 50 Inventions of 2008. It also won a 2009 Creative Arts Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Class – Short-format Live-Action Entertainment Programs.

Joss Whedon funded the project himself for just over $200,000 and enjoyed the independence of acting as his own studio.

“Freedom is glorious, and the fact is, I’ve had very good relationships with studios, and I’ve worked with a lot of smart executives. But there is a difference when you can just go ahead and do something.”

Happier times for Whedon, back then!
