The Oscars are struggling. World events, from a pandemic to war and rampant inflation are making people concerned about their own households. A bunch of multi-millionaires, flouncing up red carpets in designer gear they were given for free, is not high on many people’s agendas.

It is even worse when those multi-millionaires have been lecturing, virtue signaling, and talking down to the very people that effectively pay their wages for many years. All the while, everyone knows Hollywood is a cesspit of creative ignorance and truly terrible behavior.

Viewing figures decline year-on-year and the Oscars are now something of a figure of fun. People tune in ready to laugh at them, gleefully waiting for the next tone-deaf clunker to be dropped. When he hosted the Golden Globes, more than once up until 2020, Ricky Gervais basically destroyed Hollywood Award ceremonies forever and the Oscars have struggled to react.

First up, they caused the industry to get riled up by a perceived slight against eight key categories. The eight categories that are being cut from the live broadcast are documentary (short subject), film editing, makeup and hairstyling, music (original score), production design, short film (animated), short film (live-action), and sound.

Now they have opened the Pandora’s Box of Internet Idiocy all over themselves by instigating a #FanFavorite award and handing this over to Twitter. How touchingly naive.

The Academy has now announced the ten movies that have made the cut and will be appearing on the leaderboard. The internet has done its thing. Fan groups have mobilized. Echo chambers have echoed, and what has come out is so whacky as to be essentially worthless. You didn’t think this through, did you Academy?

Army of the Dead

The Power of the Dog

Sing 2

Spider-Man: No Way Home

The Suicide Squad

Tick, Tick…Boom!

Army Of The Dead is only there because Zack Snyder’s Justice League was ineligible. Minimata is basically included because of a dare in online Johnny Depp fan forums. Others are simply appearing because of hashtags and Reddit-based jokes.

Voting on the award closes on Thursday with the winner will be announced during the ceremony. We cannot confirm if the winner will have a bucket of slime dumped on them as they accept their award, causing much hilarity.
