It has been away for three years. Delays and COVID impacts have meant a two-year production hiatus hit just after the end of the last season. Now, however, The Orville is finally returning to screens. March 10th, 2022 it will start a new weekly run.

Seth MacFarlane’s Star Trek tribute show has constantly been the best Star Trek on TV in recent years as the standard of real-Trek has hit rock bottom through terrible shows like Star Trek: Discovery and Picard.

Taking a leaf from Star Trek: The Next Generation, it will be titled The Orville: New Horizons. New cast members are joining the crew this time around.

The-Orville

Along with Captain Ed Mercer (MacFarlane) will be Commander Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki), pilot Lt. Gordon Malloy (Scott Grimes), Isaac (Mark Jackson), Admiral Halsey (Victor Garber) and Dr. Finn (Penny Johnson Jerald).

Lt. Cmdr. Bortus (Peter Macon), Lt. Talla Keyali (Jessica Szohr), Lt. Cmdr. John LaMarr (J. Lee), Klyden (Chad L. Coleman), and Lt. Yaphit (Norm Macdonald) are all back as well – MacDonald’s part completed before his passing.

New characters include President Alcuzan (Bruce Boxleitner), Senator Balask (Lisa Banes), Ensign Charly Burke (Anne Winters), and Eliza Taylor (The 100) in an unspecified role.

The show is now a Hulu exclusive so there will be fewer episodes, but they will be longer. Hulu is waiting on the results of Season 3 before ordering Season 4.

According to the official synopsis of the show, the crew will explore:

…both the mysteries of the universe and the complexities of their own interpersonal relationships.

Hulu released a teaser for the new season as well. You can only hear the voices, but it hints at more missions, more interpersonal drama from the crew, and encounters with new aliens.

If you haven’t seen The Orville, it is worth a watch. I thought it was going to be ‘Family Guy in Space’, but it wasn’t. The comedy was much more subtle and the characters were great. I’ll be re-watching the first two seasons again before the third one is due out.
