There’s a new trailer out for Dune, Denis Villeneuve’s attempt at adapting the classic sci-fi novel. Dune is due out in Oct 2021.
This does look pretty epic! I know people have been saying they have doubts about Chalamet, but I don’t know, this might just work. Although I found the last shot of him, with his helmet coming off, looked a little too CG. With all the time they have had I would have thought they could have tidied things up.
As we all know, the movie was due out in December last year but the pandemic hit and Denis has been pushing and pushing for a cinema release instead of just direct to streaming.
We can kind of see why now. I’ve only just seen it on a 17-inch monitor but in the cinema this is going to look good. We already had one Dune trailer late last year which was also well received.
There is an impressive cast: Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem, Stellen Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, Chen Chang plus many more.
On top of the cast and a director that has a keen eye, you have a score by Hans Zimmer. Zimmer said about working on Dune :
“Whenever I saw a movie about empires far, far away, other planets, etc., I always heard trumpets and French horns and cellos playing and I’m thinking, Wow, there are all these amazing civilizations in different galaxies, places, and in different times, and they have the same instruments as we do!”
The composer said his goal was to get as far away from the typical John Williams/space epic score as possible, in part by trying to “invent our own instruments.”
The musical sounds in Warner Bros.’ presentation included low, didgeridoo-like droning, harsh percussion, whining chromatic strings, and discordant wordless vocals from a largely female chorus.
I haven’t read the books, but I know a lot of people say that David Lynch’s Dune (1984) didn’t really do the first book justice. One thing the 1984 version did suffer from was weak effects. Watching the movie again recently, it does look dated now.
This new Dune has the advantage of CG that can make things ‘real’. So what do you guys think of the new Dune trailer?
Dune is due out on 22nd October.
