From Ant-Man and the Wasp to Red Sonja. The villain from the Marvel sequel, Hannah John-Kamen, has been cast as the title character in the new movie over at Millennium.

Joey Soloway and Tasha Huo co-wrote the reboot. It is based on a character created for Marvel Comics’ Conan the Barbarian in the early 1970s.

Red Sonja

Robert E. Howard blended several smaller characters who had already appeared in the comic together to create his archetype for Red Sonja. Soloway will also direct, and in a statement he said:

“Hannah is a very talented actress who we’ve been following for years and she IS Red Sonja. Her range, sensibilities and strength are all qualities we have been looking for and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this journey together.”

John-Kamen recently wrapped production on Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City.

Red Sonja was last seen on the screen in the form of statuesque Brigitte Nielsen with Arnold Schwarzenegger in a supporting role. That movie is something of a camp, cult classic. In the comics, her character was highly sexualized. In the 21st century, it seems unlikely that this course of action will be taken.
