So this is it. Today is the day. It is rumored that yesterday the massed ranks of the real, actual, proper and accredited press were assembled at Warner Bros. for a big reveal. The future of the new DCU was laid out to them by James Gunn and Peter Safran.
Their reports will be under embargo until today, when the great unwashed, the normos, and the proles just like us also get to taste the future. It is said that there will be an open press conference and presentation at 12 noon EST. That’s 5pm UK time, or somewhere in between depending on where you are in the world.
Here at Last Movie Outpost, we will be right here with you. We will stay tuned in as DC attempts to salvage some of the most iconic characters in all of American pop culture history from the wreckage of their self-inflicted car crash, and chart a brave new course under new management to build a multimedia universe fit for the Last Son of Krypton and his friends. The DCU will be revealed.

Check back throughout the day for updates. As soon as we hear anything, we will share it with you right here in this article…

12:07 EST – Safran refers to “Bad Movie Fatigue” – both confirm quality of scripts more important than immovable release dates.
12:09 EST – Gunn has called The Flash “One of the greatest superhero movies ever made.”
12:11 EST – This first section will be linked together as Chapter 1 – Gods And Monsters of the DCU.
12:13 EST – The Batman and Joker 2 are outside. The Brave And The Bold will introduce their own version of Batman. There will be a Swamp Thing movie. The Authority will be an ensemble movie about superhumans who have a less-than-idealistic approach to saving the world.
12:15 EST – Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be based on King’s comics run of the same title from 2021 and 2022.
12:17 EST – On TV there will be:
Creature Commandos – This animated series for HBO Max is the very first project greenlit by Safran and Gunn, who has written every episode. The show is already in production.
Waller – With Gunn focused on Superman: Legacy, season 2 of Peacemaker has been put on hold. Instead, Peacemaker characters will appear alongside Davis as a “continuation” of that show, the outing of Task Force X (a.k.a. the Suicide Squad) and Waller’s role running it.
Lanterns – Safran and Gunn most excited for this which Safran described as “a huge HBO-quality event” that is “very much in the vein of ‘True Detective.’”
The show will focus on two of the best known members of the Green Lantern corps.: Hal Jordan (the test pilot first played on screen by Ryan Reynolds in 2011’s Green Lantern and John Stewart (an ex-marine and one of DC’s first Black superheroes), who investigate a mystery that Safran said “plays a really big role leading us into the main story that we’re telling across our film and television.”
Paradise Lost – “This Game of Thrones-ish story,” Safran said, is set on the island of Themyscira before the birth of Diana (a.k.a. Wonder Woman). “It’s really about the political intrigue behind a society of all women,” Safran said.
Booster Gold – Fully comedy about Mike Carter, a fan favorite among readers. Safran called Booster “a loser from the future who uses basic future technology to come back to today and pretend to be a superhero.”
12:24 EST – Robin in The Brave And The Bold will be Damian Wayne and the entire Bat-family will be present. Pattinson’s The Batman Part II – as it is now officially called – will still land in 2025. Same year as Superman: Legacy.
12:27 EST – They reiterate things are undated because nothing will move unless the script is solid.
12:30 EST – The plan is to use Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, their “Diamond Characters”, to underpin the new DCU and let these characters help introduce characters others may not have heard of.
12:45 EST – On 2023 slate etc. Peacemaker characters will continue in Waller and there is “…no reason…” why characters already in Aquaman 2, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Shazam! can’t appear – “There is nothing that prohibits that from happening.” – Gunn.
13:27 EST – Anything not in the DCU, such as The Batman Part 2, Joker 2, Teen Titans Go and so on will be explicitly labelled DC Elseworlds.
13:30 EST – DC Studios will retain full creative control, ending the interference from Warner Bros that doomed the first DCEU.
13:35 EST – Superman: Legacy will, according to Safran, focus on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.” He noted that Superman would struggle with being kind “in a world that thinks of kindness as old-fashioned.”
13:39 EST – The first DCU projects to be released will be Creature Commandos and Waller, both of which were described as an “apertif” to the big DCU plans.
13:46 EST – Viola Davis returning as Amanda Waller.
This won’t be the end of it. There are apparently going to be further announcements during the Warner Bros. Upfront 2023 event at Madison Square Gardens in May.
