Alex Garland wrote Dredd, The Beach, Sunshine, 28 Days Later, and Never Let Me Go. He wrote and directed Ex Machina and is the man behind the FX series Devs. Yet this is not even his complete resume. Now he has revealed his next feature – Civil War.

Kirsten Dunst, Stephen McKinley Henderson (Dune), Wagner Moura (Narcos), and Cailee Spaeny (Mare of Easttown) are all signed up for it. All that is known is that Civil War will take place in the United States in the not-so-distant future and it is said to be a futuristic action epic. That’s it. That is all anyone other than Garland and the cast and crew know at this point. However, it doesn’t take too much imagination to join the dots here.

Dunst is already thought to be a likely Oscar candidate for her performance in Jane Campion’s The Power of The Dog. Garland is on a streak of projects led by strong female characters.

Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, and Gregory Goodman will produce for A24. This will mark Garland’s fourth official time in the big chair, not counting Dredd which was rumored to have been shadow directed by him.

His third, the horror film Men, is also coming from A24 in 2022 and stars Rory Kinnear and Jessie Buckley.

The Beach was Garland’s first novel and was based on his own experiences backpacking through Thailand. He was always uncomfortable with the level of notoriety he got for that novel. As far back as In 2005, Garland wrote a script for a film adaptation of Halo and it was set for production. Eventually, D. B. Weiss and Josh Olson rewrote his script for a 2008 release, though the film was later canceled.
