It was mentioned a little while ago, but there is a thing in Hollywood, where movies come out, at the same time, pretty much about the same thing.

I’m calling this The Movie Twinning Effect.

The Towering Inferno was almost the first time this happened. Warner Brothers had bought the rights to a book called The Tower, 20th Century Fox had bought the rights to a book called The Glass Inferno. Both books were pretty much about the same thing, a building on fire and the rescue. The books were by two different writers, who just happened to write a similar story.

Instead of WB and Fox trying to make the same movie and racing them to the cinema, they co-produced the one movie, The Towering Inferno.

Nowadays, there are lots of co-productions and Hollywood is quite happy to just churn out two movies, about the same thing, at the same time, we see it all the time. Here are some examples:

  • Armageddon – Deep Impact
  • The Prestige – The Illusionist
  • Top Gun – Iron Eagle
  • Snow White and the Huntsman – Mirror, Mirror
  • Tombstone – Wyatt Earp
  • Goodbye Christopher Robin – Christopher Robin
  • The Descent – The Cave
  • Capote – Infamous
  • Robin Hood – Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
  • Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle – Jungle Book
  • The Truman Show – Ed TV

There are more examples in the video below.

There are so many stories out there; so many books, comics, graphic novels, that would make a great movie. There are teams of researchers trying to find the next big box office smash.

When a movie goes into production, it’s hard to keep it a secret, so if another company, gets wind of a production, they might try and make a similar product and make something like it.

Sometimes, both movies can do well, Armageddon and Deep Impact, for example, both did well in the box office. Others don’t, most people have heard of Babe, but not heard of Gordy.

I did some research and I couldn’t really find a reason why it happens, it just does. Anyway, here is a video I made about it for all to enjoy.

Are there any other examples of The Movie Twinning Effect you can think of? Why do you think it happens?
