So it’s the morning after the Oscars and I have a hangover. Not because I was at the Vanity Fair party with all the celebs, but because the existential dread of a Sunday night drove me to drink while delaying the inevitable arrival of Monday morning. But the Oscars have happened. There is nothing we can do about it.

It also begs the question, much like with the Superbowl, what kind of squares throws their biggest parties on a Sunday night? The kind of people who turn up at house parties with four stubby beers in a cardboard carrier, that’s who!

Suppose we had better talk about it. We do claim to be a movie and entertainment website, after all.

Oscars

Everything Everywhere All at Once was the big winner. It won the best picture Oscar and six other prizes, including acting nods for Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis. Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan are incredibly likable, and Jamie Lee Curtis deeply affected teenage me from Trading Places onwards, so good for all three of them.

In the other good news story of the night, the Brendan Fraser renaissance was completed as he picked up Best Actor for The Whale. Having suffered terribly at the hands of Hollywood, it is great to see him picking up that award.

Oscars

All Quiet On the Western Front picked up four wins including best international feature film.

The lack of women in the best director category has caused some comments. Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins was decrying this in interviews before the event. Canadian filmmaker Sarah Polley did win the best-adapted screenplay award for Women Talking.

Hollywood completely failed to recognize Top Gun: Maverick for basically saving all their asses with a slice of Americana devoid of “The Message”, but that was to be expected.

Oscars

Jimmy Kimmel hosted for the third time and has won plaudits from people who care about such things.

“It’s official. Jimmy Kimmel has cemented his place as one of the great Oscar hosts. The late-night host and Emmy winner has officially joined the ranks of Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, and, dare I say, Billy Crystal as one of the most accomplished and polished to do the job.”

Gold Derby

“[Kimmel] nimbly through a mélange of topical one-liners, sincere acknowledgments, and good-dumb dad jokes…”

Entertainment Weekly

And all this happened without anyone slapping anyone live on stage this time around. Will Smith watched the Oscars from home.
