Jason Statham is a busy man these days. He’s out doing press for Wrath Of Man, his heist and revenge thriller collaboration with Guy Ritchie. He’s already shooting another movie, spy thriller Five Eyes, also with Ritchie. After that, he has confirmed he is rolling straight on to giant shark sequel The Meg 2 with director Ben Wheatley.

Interviewed by Collider, Statham says that the studio is planning to start filming The Meg 2 early next year. He said he can’t wait to work with Ben Wheatley:

“We’re gonna start shooting in January if I get my dates right. Ben Wheatley is the director. I’m very excited to work with him.

I’m thrilled to get going. Its been a while. We’ve been waiting around for the right scripts to come in and the right director to turn up, and we’ve got all those things, and they’re all stacked up now.

[Wheatley’s] great. We have a great shorthand already. We’ve got similar taste. I like his movies. I think he’s a brilliant director. I think we’ve got a good shot at making something good.”

2018’s The Meg was a major hit for the studio, raking in over $500 million in the late summer slot. This turned a tidy profit even with it having to swallow the famous twenty-year plus development costs.

The movie was loosely based on Steve Alten’s Meg: A Novel Of Deep Terror. The Meg book series has seven entries and an eighth on the way. In the second book, The Trench, hero Jonas Taylor found himself employed by the Tanaka Institute where a captured juvenile Meg from the first book had grown to huge proportions and was becoming a problem in captivity.

The entire Tanaka storyline, along with the whale lagoon used to house the captured Meg was jettisoned from the movie adaption of the first entry, along with large parts of the novel, several characters, and numerous sub-plots.

It is unclear what they will use from the second novel to create the storyline for the second movie. Li Bingbing is expected to return as Suyin, as well as Ruby Rose as Jaxx, and Page Kennedy as DJ.

A summer 2023 release is the plan right now.
