It just started production a couple of weeks ago, but The Meg 2: The Trench is boosting its cast. The London-based production has added Sienna Guillory (Resident Evil: Retribution), Skyler Samuels (The Gifted), and Sergio Peris-Mencheta (Snowfall). The original was a surprise smash-hit for Warner Bros. and went on to gross nearly $600 million and did good business at home.
Jason Statham returns as Jonas Taylor, Cliff Curtis as James Macreides, and Shuya Sophia Cai as Meiying – the young girl in the first movie – all come back. Li Bing Bing is expected to return. Page Kennedy is back as DJ.
Guillory will play the head of an applied sciences division, Samuels is a member of Statham’s submarine crew, and Peris-Mencheta is described as “a hard-edged mercenary villain” character, which would point to elements of the second Steve Alten book making it into the adaption, in which some people return to the Mariana Trench with nefarious purposes, and find that the Meg was not alone down there.
Jon and Erich Hoeber wrote the script for the new film which Gravity Pictures and Di Bonaventura Pictures are producing.
The most fascinating aspect of this production is the director Ben Wheatley. The High-Rise and Free Fire director is a fascinating choice to make this movie and we are curious to see what direction he takes this in after the first movie seriously toned down the glorious mayhem and gore of the Alten novels for a wider movie audience.
The Meg 2 is expected out in 2023.
