If you’re a wrestling fan, you know who the Von Erich family is. They’re one of the most recognizable families in all of wrestling. Unfortunately, their legacy status is over shadowed by the devastating fall.

Their story is finally getting the silver screen treatment and now has at least one star attached to it – Zac Efron. The title is The Iron Claw and will be directed by Sean Durkin (The Rental). A24 will be financing and producing the film, alongside Tessa Ross, Derrin Schlesinger, and Harrison Huffman.

The movie will be based on the true story of the Von Erichs, one of pro wrestling’s most famous families in history and particularly celebrated in Texas.

Von Erichs

The plot is mostly unknown and it’s not clear what part Efron will play. It can be assumed that he’ll be playing one of the Von Erich brothers. My guess would be Kevin Von Erich. The synopsis says:

The film follows the rise and fall of the Von Erich family, a dynasty of wrestlers who made a huge impact on the sport from the 1960s to the present day.

The title, The Iron Claw, comes from the trademark wrestling hold the family would use on their opponents. The family was headed by the father, Fritz Von Erich.

Efron has been busy. He just starred in Gold and Firestarter and still has The Greatest Beer Run Ever coming out, co-starring Russell Crowe and Bill Murray. He’s also in a Netflix comedy co-starring Nicole Kidman and Jeff King.

The story of the Von Erichs is tragic, I encourage anyone to checkout The Story of The Von Erich Family or the 30 for 30 Shorts episode about the family.
