One of the most iconic theme park rides in Disney history is coming to the big screen… again. When Pirates Of The Caribbean went huge at the box office, Disney decided The Haunted Mansion would be next up. Movies based on theme park rides were, back then, going to be the “Cinematic Universe” before the MCU was even a thing.
The 2003 movie starred Eddie Murphy, Terence Stamp, Nathaniel Parker, Marsha Thomason, and Jennifer Tilly. It did not go well.
This never stops Disney though. They are going again. Disney’s new live-action The Haunted Mansion is to be released in theaters on July 28th and now there is a teaser trailer.
The new film stars Rosario Dawson as a single mother, Gabbie. She purchases a mansion in New Orleans that has a strangely low price tag. The reason for the bargain price for the house quickly becomes clear. To fight back against the various spirits and ghouls, Gabbie puts together a team of specialists including priest (Owen Wilson), a psychic (Tiffany Haddish), a historian (Danny DeVito), and a paranormal expert (Lakeith Stanfield).
The teaser shows that many of the iconic parts of the ride will be recreated in the movie, including the Hatbox Ghost, the organ player, the attic bride Constance Hatchaway, several well-known spooky paintings, and even the famed Stretching Room from the ride queue.
Justin Simien (Dear White People, Bad Hair) directs The Haunted Mansion, from a screenplay by Katie Dippold (The Heat, Ghostbusters 2016 – uh-oh!). There is an ensemble cast backing up the main players, with appearances from Dan Levy, Winona Ryder, Hasan Minhaj, Jared Leto, and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Here is the new teaser.
