To say that Hollywood is running out of original ideas is like saying that Matt has Superman PJs. It’s obviously true, and further evidence of this comes with Fox ordering a pilot of Bedrock, a spin-off series from The Flintstones.

Yes, The Flintstones, which ran from 1960 to 1966, is getting a spin-off. There was an attempt to reboot it in movie form in 1994 via John Goodman and Rick Moranis playing Fred and Barny. Then in 2000, there was a sequel – The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, which had Mark Addy and Stephen Baldwin play the roles.

This new spin-off is already getting some big names behind it. Well, actors have to eat too. Stephen Root is playing Fred, with Amy Sedaris playing Wilma. Elizabeth Banks will be their grown-up daughter Pebbles.

Joe Lo Truglio will be playing Barney, Nicole Byer will play Betty and Manny Jacinto is Bam Bam. Betty in the original series was hot! So I hit up the internet to look for Byer.

Deadline says that Bedrock:

“…catches up with the Flintstone family two decades later, with Fred on the brink of retirement and 20-something Pebbles embarking on her own career. As the Stone Age gives way to a shiny and enlightened new Bronze Age, the residents of Bedrock will find this evolution harder than a swing from Bam-Bam’s club.”

So, and I’m just spitballing here, but I think the series will probably focus on Pebbles, who’s a strong and independent woman. This would be nice and original as no other show or movie has thought about this take in the past few years.

Well, I may be wrong, as here’s an original idea that Bedrock will use. Pebbles will be married to her childhood sweetheart, Bam Bam. Imagine that, a woman being married to a man, what an age we live in! She and Bam Bam will head to Hollyrock, a fictional version of Hollywood.

I have fond memories of watching The Flintstones as a kid, so I’m going to look forward to seeing how that will all be ruined by Bedrock.
