Lovecraft Country and The Last Black Man in San Francisco actor and hot prospect Jonathan Majors is in early talks to co-star in Creed III. The talks are apparently around the Creed III bad guy role.

Michael B. Jordan returns as Adonis Creed and this time he will also be taking on directing duties. Sylvester Stallone is not returning for the new instalment, keeping the promise his character made at the end of Creed II. Tessa Thompson and Phylicia Rashad will return.

Real-life boxer Tony Bellew played the nemesis in Creed. In Creed II, Florian Munteanu was the opponent. He boxed in Romania before becoming an actor and still uses the sport to stay in shape.

Jonathan Majors is an actor. The choice of an actor would perhaps indicate that they will be needing somebody who can appear in a capacity beyond that of a seemingly insurmountable challenge. Does this mean we will be seeing much more of the opponent as a character in this third installment?

Majors also starred in Da 5 Bloods, When We Rise and Jungle Land. Next up is black western The Harder They Fall for Netflix. He is also tagged to appear as Kang The Conqueror in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. That character’s appearance is expected to pave the way for the introduction of the Fantastic Four into the MCU.

Keenan Coogler (Space Jam: A New Legacy) and Zach Baylin wrote the script from a treatment by Ryan Coogler, who wrote and directed the original Creed.

This will be a key test for the onward viability of this franchise. The previous two movies were respectable follow-ups to the Rocky movies and carried the legacy well. As Rocky says at the climax of Creed II, it is time for Apollo to stand on his own.

We will see if the movies can continue strongly without the character of Rocky Balboa who was so intertwined in the universe in which they exist.

Creed III is down for a November 23rd, 2022 release.
