The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke has confirmed that Homelander, played by Antony Starr, is based on President Donald Trump. Seriously!
Kripke recently spoke to Rolling Stone:
“[Homelander has] always been a Trump analogue to me. I admit to being a little balder this season than in previous seasons. But the world is getting cruder and less elegant. The urgency of our team’s writing reflects that.
But part of that is where Homelander’s story naturally goes. He’s got this really combustible mix of utter weakness and insecurity, and just horrible power and ambition, and it’s just such a deadly combo. Of course, he would feel victimized if people were angry that he dated a Nazi. All he wants is to be the most powerful person he can be, even if he’s completely unable to handle it.”
He keeps going:
“So it’s white male victimization and unchecked ambition. And those issues just happened to mirror the guy who, it’s still surreal to say, was the fucking president of the United States. United.
And that’s a bigger problem than Trump. The horrific public figures are, the more fans they seem to have. That’s a phenomenon we wanted to explore, that Homelander realizes he can actually show them who he really is and they’ll love him for it.”
WOW! It’s very rare these days for one of the douchebags in the entertainment industry to blow my mind, as you generally expect this kind of thing (or worse!) from them but this is some truly outstanding work from Kripke. How do you say “Tell me you are completely out of touch with reality without actually telling me”?
I’m going to bite my lip before I go off on one about the current state of politics and save my thoughts for a Drunken Yoda Unplugged episode.
