Whether being riddled with corruption, incompetently led, upstaged by a man dressed as a flying rodent, or having their entire force locked in a sewer for months, it isn’t easy being in Gotham PD. Even their own Commissioner bypasses them for back-up that he summons with a big torch on the roof.

So after the Gotham TV show that recently ended with the introduction of the crime-fighter, we hear they are having another go at telling the inside so story of Gotham Police. This will be tied so closely to the upcoming Matt Reeves movie, The Batman, that Reeves himself with be Executive Producer.

HBO Max has looped in Warner Bros. Television to order a season of a new drama set around life in Gotham PD It will build upon the world The Batman presents and go deeper into the corruption in Gotham City, the freaks, the gangs and the infighting.

This sounds like the TV show Gotham was supposed to be. The show we were promised but they never delivered. What makes this any different? Good intentions will be sacrificed on the altar of TV, and we will end up with a slightly gloomy Berlanti-verse entry, right?

Apparently not. Reeves wants some creative oversight and they have brought in Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter to help run the show. He will also write some episodes and it is rumored the Gotham Central comics line will be an inspiration. Reeves is excited. He made a statement:

“This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford – and getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream.”

Reeves recently signed a deal with Warner’s including the TV so this must be the first cab off the rank. It is not clear whether Batman will be among the characters on the show, however at the very least I imagine they will have him lurking in the background as a presence, mentioned but not seen.
