The new trailer for The Batman was one of the most shared online videos within hours of its release as part of DC Fandome on Saturday. Warner Bros. and DC aren’t going to let the buzz die down quite yet. They have followed up with a short featurette. What is also interesting are some comments that have been attributed to an interview by director Matt Reeves on his film’s two leads, Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz.
This throws additional light on their interpretation of the character of Batman. Reeves calls him a:
“…recluse rockstar in a decaying manor…”
Pattinson meanwhile talked about his approach to the character, building on how it is really early in his career as the Caped Crusader:
“He doesn’t have as much control over his personality. The delineation between when he’s Batman and when he’s Bruce is not so clear. In other iterations, he really knows what he’s doing when he’s putting on the cowl.
I kind of really liked this idea: it’s a little bit out of control. He hasn’t completely defined what Batman is. He gets lost in it. Whenever he’s putting it on every night, he’s basically not sleeping and becoming this quite sort of odd creature.”
This barely controlled rage is evident several times in the trailer, including in what appears to be a confrontation with a jailed Riddler (Paul Dano).
This movie started its life as a Ben Affleck vehicle with the star also directing. It was due to follow the events of Batman v Superman and Justice League. It was said to explore the death of Robin, which was suggested in Batman v Superman. A 2018 release was penciled in.
While Affleck reaffirmed his commitment to direct the movie several times, he eventually stepped down from the role and from directing.
Those plans were completely abandoned and this new iteration was born. Confusingly Affleck returned to the role for re-shoots of Zack Snyder’s Justice League and will again reprise the character in The Flash.
